What to Expect from a Chiropractic Adjustment

Our chiropractic patients often experience great benefits from their visits to our office. For these patients, getting chiropractic adjustments becomes part of their wellness routine and a normal part of their monthly self-care practice. But, for first-time patients, the thought of someone manipulating a highly sensitive area can seem unsettling. If you are curious about visiting our office—or any chiropractor—but your nerves are holding you back, this article is for you! We’ve put together a quick snapshot of what you can expect from a chiropractic adjustment.

First, be prepared to answer some basic questions like your medical history, allergies, and the purpose of your visit. Before you go in for your exam, make sure to pay attention to your pain and be able to give descriptive details about your discomfort. You might consider reflecting on some of these frequently asked questions before your first visit:
• Where is the pain located?
• Is the pain dull or sharp?
• Is the pain consistent or infrequent?
• Which activities make the pain better or worse?
• When did the pain start and is it a result of an injury or specific activity?

After your doctor has listened to you describe your pain, you can expect to have your doctor touch the areas of your body that are providing pain or discomfort. We always act with your health as our primary focus, which means we may want to do x-rays or various other tests and screenings to fully understand what is going on in your body that is causing your aches and pains.

Within our practice, we use a computer technology called Pro Adjuster to enhance the manual adjustments we perform on our patients. The Pro Adjuster quickly and accurately measures the rigidity and fluidity of the vertebrae within the spine, which provides us with very precise information about what’s going on in your back and neck. With that information, we’re better able to create a comprehensive care plan that will push your body toward peak health performance without doing the “snapping and cracking” routines that are often associated with chiropractic care.

Once your treatment plan is in place, you will work with us to receive adjustments, stretches, and lifestyle changes that will help you feel better. Treatment is different for each patient, but there are typically three outcomes that patients experience after an initial chiropractic treatment.
1. Minor soreness. We always recommend icing the areas treated in the beginning of your care plan.
2. Subtle or no change or response. This is okay! Chiropractic care is either undoing years (sometimes decades) of experience or helping to safely mend your spine after an injury. Immediate relief is not always the optimal result of a treatment.
3. Decreased pain and discomfort. While reduced pain can seem like an ideal result of a chiropractic treatment, we often see patients injure themselves further if their initial treatment greatly reduces pain. Patients may feel well enough to jump back into normal activities or even increase activities that strain their neck or back and aggravate the reason for pain in the first place!

Be sure to pay attention to your recommended treatment plan, including stretches, rest, and activities to avoid or reduce. Some patients report sleeping better at night, improved range of motion, and the absence of pain during normal daily activities like cleaning or walking up the stairs.
